Magazine Project

The elements of your magazine should be in a Word document and should include the following:
  • What is the theme of your magazine?
  • What is the title of your magazine?
  • List the articles (at least 6) and give the topic and word count of each
  • List the ads (at least 8) and give the topic and page size of each
This should be written up in grammatically correct English, with your name in the header, printed and turned in by the end of class Friday.

The mock-up should be hand-drawn/hand-written on 8.5x11 folded in half.
  • Each page should be numbered accurately
  • The ads should be placed appropriately and drawn in relative detail (Not perfect, but not just squiggles)
  • The starting point for each article should be indicated, along with the article name
  • The number of columns on each page should be indicated

You are going to create a magazine based on the theme of your choice.

  • At least 3 articles of 500+ words 300+ words
  • At least 2 articles of 1000+ words 500+ words
  • At least 1 article of 2000+ words 1000+ words
  • At least 3 1/4 page ads At least 2
  • At least 3 1/2 page ads
  • At least 4 full-page ads At least 2
  • At least 1 2-page ad
  • Front & Back covers
  • One "letter from the Editor" of 300+ words (YOU are the editor) of 150+ words
You may create the articles yourself, or get them from online. Online MUST have full attribution

Create a "business package" for your client. Items to include:
  • business card
  • postcard
  • letterhead
  • return address label
  • envelope
  • sticky notes
Research at places like iprint.com and vistaprint.com for ideas and for prices. Once you have created each of the items in Scribus, generate a price list in MSWord to use for future assignments.

  3. Go to this website, select TWO articles to read and present to the class
  4. Start reading and taking notes.
    1. You can create a new page in OneNote for your articles, and take your notes there. :)

Finish the Inkscape tutorials
Write a "Character Sketch" for your fairy tale character. If you are still looking for a client/character, research the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson. Remember, I do not want a movie or a Disney version!

Your sketch should include:
  • Name
  • Occupation (based on the fairy tale/s, what does the character do for a living - what kind of work?)
  • Family life
  • Preferences -- use your imagination
    • colors
    • fonts
    • foods
    • music
    • favorite movie
    • Personal motto

Based on the Character Sketch, create a logo for your client ON PAPER FIRST. Paper version must be ok'ed before you move to Inkscape. The logo must
  • Create recognition
  • Be recognizable at a distance
  • Fit in small and large spaces
  • Aid in memory encoding and decoding
  • Be easy to recognize and remember
  • Represent the character
  • Create communications synergy
  • Bring out positive emotions

Once you have completed the corrections, get paper (and a writing instrument if needed)
SKETCH your ideas for the flyer
  • Word Art? Where? What words?
  • Clip Art? Where? What images?
  • No more than two fonts - which ones?
  • Text? What words? Where?
  • ASSUME A TIME OF 10:00 A.M.
Select you best idea and bring the SKETCH to teacher
Once your sketch has been okayed, start creating the flyer

Create a bumper sticker that your favorite book character would have on his/her vehicle.
  1. Use Publisher to create the bumper sticker
  2. In the search box type in "bumper sticker" (without the quote marks)
  3. Click on the Office Depot template, then click Create
  4. Save as YLN_bumper
  5. Get a piece of colored paper and draw your bumper sticker (THIS IS MANDATORY)
  6. Requirements:
    1. No more than 3 fonts (one each Serif, San Serif, Fantasy)
    2. At least one graphic image
      1. you may use clip art and modify it, but NO INTERNET ART
    3. Legible text (you must be able to read it from the middle of the room)
    4. Your logo no more than 50px by 50 px
    5. A theme that reflects your book character
    6. A color scheme of 3 colors (one primary, two accent)
  7. This is for a test grade

  3. You have been asked to create a business card for a teacher here at TMS.
  • Create a Word document for your Business Card Draft
  • Save As YourLastName_Teacher_Draft
  • What information does your client want on the card?
  • What graphics does your client want on the card?
  • What color paper?
  • What color/s ink?
  • Research at least 6 sites with guides/tutorials/suggestions for creating business cards (write down the URL's in your Word document)
  • Create a rough draft in your Word document of the finished card
  • Print the rough draft and let me see it
  • Go to an online business card creation site and create a dummy business card
  • If possible, print the dummy card

  1. Complete any revisions on your brochure. If I checked your brochure yesterday, you have quite a bit of work to do. Also, if I checked your brochure yesterday, please check the work of someone I did not get to and give them advice based on what I told you.
  2. Create a PowerPoint (Save As YourLastName_brochure). Use screenshots from your brochure to illustrate your use of
    1. Contrast
    2. Alignment
    3. Repetition
    4. Proximity
    5. Contact information
    6. Copyright information
    7. Examples of the fonts you used, identifying them as Fantasy, Sans Serif or Serif
  3. Zoom in on the area of interest before you take the screenshot (See Below)
  4. Save Frequently!

How to take a screenshot
  1. Get the area you want to shoot in the center of your screen (zoom in if need be)
  2. Hold down the Control key
  3. While holding the Control key, press the Print Screen key
    1. This puts a copy of the screen on your clipboard
  4. Control-V to Paste the shot into your PowerPoint
  5. Repeat 1-4 as needed

Your dummy copy must be approved before you begin putting your brochure together on the computer. You may use Inkscape, Word or Publisher to create your brochure.

Continue working on your brochure. Elements to consider include:
  • What is your Purpose? What does your client (Disney Corp) want to accomplish with the brochure?
  • Who is your Reader? What does the target audience look like? Average age? Number of children? Average income?
  • What is your Information? What pictures do you want to include? What text do you want to include?
  • How will you Organize your Information? What color palette will you use (the main color and two accent colors)? What fonts will you use (Fantasy, Serif, San-serif)? Where will you place each picture? Where will you place each block of text? [All of this goes into/on your dummy copy]

Vocabulary 1 - You are responsible for knowing all the terms, even though you only had to find definitions for a few. You do *not* need to memorize the definitions, but rather have an understanding (in your own words) of each term. We will be using these terms constantly in class, so get them in your head soon! :)
